Originally Sarah chose to keep the walls gray but accent with an orange, yellow, brown and blue palette. At the last minute, and without the homeowners’ knowledge, she changed the plan and painted the living room, kitchen, dining room and entryway a light orange. A basic principle of feng shui is living in harmony with one’s surroundings, so the final effect unifies the various spaces and sets a warm, southwestern tone in the home. By the way, the homeowners loved the surprise.

Redoing a living room may not be as daring as jumping out of a plane, but it’s still a harrowing task for these adventurous homeowners. A design student blends southwest elements and feng shui to create a soothing living room.

Scale, proportion and balance are elements of good design and make all the difference in this alcove. The custom-built entertainment center uses the wall to better organize the entertainment equipment and to display artwork that features southwestern scenes. Weber painted the cabinet the same color as the wall to blend it into the space.
