Designer Daniela Franciscus creates an eye-catching look for a brick row house with bold blue paint and a feng shui courtyard.

Becky and Billy Gallagher enjoy living in their rehabbed inner-city row house, and want to create a feng shui retreat in their front yard. The brick color is lifeless and dull, the front steps are slopping and uneven, plus the postage stamp-sized front yard is covered with dirt and weeds.

Designer Daniela Franciscus had to make some tough decisions, yet created an eye-catching look with a few gallons of paint bold blue paint and a Zen transformation for the tiny courtyard.

The scruffy grass and concrete in the courtyard were replaced with a meditative stone labyrinth, a wooden bench and an iron railing.

A variety of low-maintenance plants in terra-cotta pots provide a bit of soothing green to the space.

Franciscus included all five elements of feng shui in the makeover: metal, wood, earth and fire in addition to water, which is part of a burbling feature.
